Beinhaus, Karner, Ossuary, Hallstatt

Prepare to be both spooked and awe-inspired with a trip to Beinhaus, Karner, Ossuary, the famous bone house on the ground floor of a 12th-century chapel. The site holds over 1,200 human skulls, 610 of which have been hand-painted in floral designs. In the 18th century the chapel's cemetery became too crowded, and thus the practice emerged of digging up graves 10 to 15 years after death in order to free up a lot. The unearthed skulls were kept, cleaned, and bleached. Following the custom of decorating a grave with flowers, it became a tradition to paint the skulls with flowers. The skulls are grouped by family, with the dates of death written on them. Respectful silence is expected. • Very cozy room, worth visiting here and looking around, walking a big one. The only drawback is a lot of Asians. Seriously, you can't move on from them, and they stop taking pictures on every corner, so you hang almost the whole narrow street.

  • In Hallstatt, where the land was smaller, it was dug out about 10 years after burial and it was said that only the skull was placed in the nave. The nave is located on the grounds of the Catholic Church and allows the person in charge at the entrance to pay an entrance fee of EUR 1.5. The Japanese explanation at the entrance had their meaning written on each of the flowers and leaves written on the skull. The inside was a cool space, and I was surprised that there were a lot of skulls in a small place.
