The family lived there for 26 years, on the third floor of the House of Johann Lorenz Hagenauer (1712-1792), shopkeeper-grocer, owner and friend of Father Leopold Mozart. The family moved in 1773. Today the entire building has been transformed into a memorabilia museum for the composer. Most of his early works were composed there. The museum was inaugurated on June 15, 1880, by the Mozart International Foundation. In 1985, the bourgeois interiors of the 1st floor were reconstructed with furniture and objects, including Wolfgang's staff, from everyday life. In 1994, the house was restored, redeveloped, enlarged and secured. On the 2nd floor, small figures illustrate models of staging, sets and documents of the realization of the operas. On the 3rd floor, his violins, his first childhood and concert, his clavicorde, his harpsichord, his spruce, his scores, letters from the family and portrais. This floor was revisited, in 2006, by the creation of poetic sets in sound and light, for the 250th anniversary of his birth.
Very small museum but with a pretty good audio guide. Did not have a lot of Mozart owned items but did a good job of providing his history. Primarily for Mozart lovers. more »
A huge disappointment, maybe just my expectations were much different from reality: I expected a domestic stuff of a famous composer, but there is nothing expect some papers. I can't treat the exhibition nothing more but deception.
The exhibits lack overt interest (books, papers, ephemera), and the rooms are crowded. 3 stars given for its historical significance, but you could easily skip this place without worry of having missed much. Just take a picture from outside so you can brag about having visited during casual conversation when someone plays Mozart ;) Note that there is, however, a quiet cafe in the courtyard, which is free to visit.
