#2 of 3,940 in Things to do in Austria
Intricate in design and architecture, St. Stephen's Cathedral is a cultural icon and symbol of Austrian identity. With a multicolored tile roof and tall Romanesque towers, it has become one of the most recognizable images of the city. Consecrated in 1147, the cathedral stands on the remains of former versions, which were destroyed by fire, siege, and World War II. The cathedral's repairs and rebuilding can be seen today in the mixture of Romanesque and Gothic styles. Join a guided tour to learn more about the iconic building's history. Separate tours lead you through the main cathedral, the catacombs, the treasury, or up one of the towers for a view of Vienna from above. • Such a grand cathedral, it is huge. Very beautiful and right in the middle of a very busy shopping street and the Vienna City Center. There was a concert held in the cathedral when we were there...  more »

  • St Stephen's Cathedral is probably the main highlight of Vienna and a monument to how important religion used to be. The church is massive and an awe to behold. Unsurprisingly, the church is constantly crowded, so you'll have to jostle with the hordes of crowd when visiting the church. They also have specific opening times so it's best that you check their website prior to visiting. The church also offers different tours to different sections of the church for a price, such as the main sanctuary, the tower and the catacombs. If you have the time and money, it's good to go for all. You can get all the info from the website. We went for the catacombs tour and we absolutely love it. Not only will you be able to see the bodies of the past bishops, you'll also able to see actual bones from black plague victims buried underneath the church. It was quite the creepy experience but totally worth it. St Stephen's is unlike other European churches I've seen due to its scale alone, and the catacombs were our favourite part. Definitely worth the 6 Euros.
  • I like visiting churches. I think they are calming. This one is really nice. There are usually a lot of people, but the staff is friendly and helpful. We went up the tower and it gives a nice view from up there. Due to the small elevator, the amount of people up there is limited which gives the opportunity to take nice pictures. In front of the church there are some people trying to sell tickets for concerts, but if you tell them you don't want anything, they leave you alone and don't pressure you.
