Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp

4.5
#1 of 16 in Historic Sites in Antwerp
Stand in wonder at the delicately carved reliefs and statuary of the iconic, yet incomplete, Cathedral of Our Lady. The cathedral's single Gothic spire pierces the sky at 123 m (404 ft); plans to build a matching partner were never realized. The cathedral played an important role in the development of choral music, with some of the 15th-century masters making their home here as vicars. Consider attending a concert in the chapel to experience the sounds that inspired an entire generation of musicians. Be sure to check out the Rubens painting housed inside; it was returned to its place after World War II. • To this place that can not be overlooked as Patlash fan. At dusk in the middle of winter, people were sparse, and we could slowly look around the basilica. The paintings of Rubens, seen in its solemn atmosphere and silence, feel powerful. The city of Antwerp is a place where you can feel Rubens, but this is just the highlight!

  • The entrance to this beautiful cathedral is breathtaking. Despite the size of the whole it is impressively close to the visitor. Certainly the many paintings of Rubens are worth the sight. The attached descriptions and explanations in various languages makes it a very nice lesson art history and art experience the architecture/construction of the cathedral is beautifully displayed with different models. A pity on the one hand that there is no ' electronic tour '.

  • Incredibly beautiful church. Well worth the time to see it outside and inside. Many Rubin paintings and other exquisite religious art. I especially liked the homeless art. Wish we had more time to spend there but we were on a tour and had to keep up with the group.
  • Entrance fee is 6 euros. Worth it. Home of some amazing artwork. If you have the time, definitely block out at least 3 hours for the place to examine each peace of painting. Follow a guide by the entrance, they are volunteers. Mostly guided tours are done in English, French, or Dutch. Depending on the day, there may be other languages. If you know nothing of Christianity and/or art, you need a guided tour to appreciate it. I am going back. I spent about 2 hours with the guide and we barely scratched the surface of the place.
