The Jerusalem Chapel & Adornes Domain, Bruges

4.4
Step into the world of a wealthy pilgrim in The Jerusalem Chapel & Adornes Domain, which dates back to the 15th century. Comissioned by a Christian pilgrim recently returned from Jerusalem, the church is full of dark carved wood lit by dim lights. The most famous piece in the chapel is the altar, adorned with skulls and ladders, which recalls an early era in Christianity. This same altar made an appearance in the film "In Bruges." Visit the museum attached to the church where you can read information plaques in English on the church's history, as well as a brief history on the city of Bruges. The church and museum are small and don't take long to tour. Arrange to visit The Jerusalem Chapel & Adornes Domain and other attractions in Bruges using our Bruges itinerary builder app .

  • A really nice chapel worth a visit! You can learn the entire story of how the chapel has been built and how the entire idea for it has started from a short film that you can see in one part of the museum. The other part is the chapel itself with plenty of backstory and interesting relics, like the splinter from Jesus's Cross.
  • Only recently opened to the public. The church is private property since the middle ages. Really nice interior, quite unusual. Be sure to visit the museum and see the short movie on Anselmus Adornes for some background.
