Shangzhangwei( Sheung Cheung Wai) Reviews
One of the oldest walled cities is Sheung Shui and to be honest if you don’t have any connections, it’s not a place to visit. I just like it because of the history. The small houses, the village and..... more »
There are a few walled villages left in Hong Kong, and this is one of them. You are not allowed into the village itself, though, only being allowed to stand outside on the modern concrete roadway... more »
Nothing might seem unusual in preservation of the old walled village. Yet it reflects the past & present of village homes which Hong Kong often neglects to retain history...
Sheung Cheung Wai is one of the stops along the Ping Shan Heritage Trail in Yuen Long, located between the Shring of the Earth God and the Old Well. This is a typical walled village structure built by local villagers around 200 years ago. While an interesting inclusion on the Heritage Trail, Sheung Cheung Wai remains a place of residency so it is not open to the public for visitation. However, you can spend a couple minutes viewing the outer facade and main entrance into the building to enjoy the traditional architecture. Have a quick look and then make your way to other attractions along the Heritage Trail. If you are interested in exploring a traditional walled village during your visit to Hong Kong, consider Kat Hing Wai, which is also near Yuen Long or Tsang Tai Uk in Shati. This one is closer to the city for those staying in Kowloon or HK Island.
