Statue Square, Hong Kong

3.1

Statue Square (Chinese: 皇后像廣場; lit. "Empress' Statue Square") is a public pedestrian square in Central, Hong Kong. Built entirely on reclaimed land at the end of the 19th century, Statue Square consists of two parts separated by Chater Road into a northern and a southern section. It is bordered by Connaught Road Central in the north and by Des Voeux Road Central in the south.

The name is a reference to the statues, mainly of British royalty, which stood on the square until the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. Today, the only statue on the square is the one of Sir Thomas Jackson, 1st Baronet, an early HSBC banker.

  • Great open area in the middle of the Central Station area. Plenty of shops around, and some nice hidden gem bars. The square itself has sheltered seating, nice water features and fountains, and every Christmas it gets really heavily decorated. It's a good place to sit and just reflect on your next series of steps into downtown Hong Kong!
  • A bustling area full of socializing and people expressing themselves creatively through dance or religiously. On the day I was there it was full of Filipino workers on their day off. And a congregation of seemingly religious looking cohort filled up the opposite side of the street. Beautiful architecture are sprawled around the square with a reputable mall within walking distance.
