Fort Carre is also known as Fort Carré d'Antibes. It was named the squared foot in the 16th-century when Henri de Mandon (Henry III) added four arrowhead shaped bastions to a tower called la tour Saint-Florent. In the 17th century, the Marquis de Vauban fortified the fort by adding traverses and outer walls, enlarging the embrasures and exchanging the stone parapets for brick parapets. Fort Carre is also well known for housing (imprisoning) Napoleon Bonaparte for 10 days and the villain's fortress in the James Bond film, Never Say Never Again.     This fort has protected the Côte d’Azur for centuries, in particular, the port of Antibes, first built by the Greeks 2,500 years ago. It is open from 10am to 5 or 6 pm year around except on Mondays...  more »

    Our tour guide was awesome, providing information in French AND ENGLISH because we requested it. She wasn’t that confident that her English was good but it was AMAZING! Having been on the French only....  more »

    Can reach the place via free shuttle in Antibes from Port Marine(near old town). The view from Fort is good. Can be visited if you’re a James Bond fan as there was a scene shot for Never say never again here. Also the panoramic view was nice from the top.

    The Fort Carré was one of the first fortified strongholds to be built in the Renaissance under the orders of the King of France, Henri II. It was used to guard the nearby border with the County of Nice and to defend the town of Antibes. Its fascinating history, which sheds light on the whole of the region, its beautiful architecture based on mathematical principles, its rampart walkway (43 metres high) offering unbeatable views, and lastly the 4 hectares of protected gardens with typically Mediterranean flora and fauna make this monument a place well worth discovering. Closed on 1 January, 1May, 1November and 25 December Visitors can explore the Fort with a guide. Visits start every half hour. Last visit 30 minutes before closing time
