Cryptoportiques, Arles

3.3
Admire the first-century architecture of Cryptoportiques--three double, parallel passageways that were part of the forum. Fifty piers hold up the tunnel-like structures, which are arranged in a U shape. These once may have been barracks for slaves. Though the name is Roman, markings on the stones indicate that Greeks built these Arles structures. The Chapel of the Jesuit College and the City Hall now reside where the forum used to. • These are absolutely amazing if you are interested in the Roman history of the area. To walk under the town square and see 2000 year old sculptures and to think that the tunnels are still functional....  more »
  • Not really worth the effort from our point of view. Yes it’s the storage area beneath the now disappeared Roman forum but there is relatively little to see. Dark and damp with a very uneven floor and....  more »

  • With very warm and friendly reception staff, this place, so cool in the summer heat, is a must for any Ancient Rome aficionado. I loved it, though with almost non-existent signage, no back story illuminated in any meaningful way to a lay visitor, I can understand people questioning the €4.50 entry fee to see, in parts, "damp cellar" dripping water. An opportunity gone begging, one could say, but still worth the visit due to its condition (for me, even better than Nero's cement cryptoporticus in Rome) and one can always google additional info.
  • The place only offers the tour of the old forum passing under the city. Pretty muddy, and smell special! Too bad, you might need some explanatory signs because this place has been served many things over the years!
