Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, Bayeux

4.6
Musee de la Tapisserie de Bayeux displays a 70-m (230-ft) embroidered tapestry crafted in the 11th century. Stitched after the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, to celebrate England's conquest by William the Conqueror, this remarkable linen canvas depicts Viking ships, a comet, Saxon and Norman cavalries, and a mysterious exchange between a cleric and an Anglo-Saxon woman. The museum provides English translations of the Tituli Latin scripts; a 16-minute video, also in English, presents the tapestry’s historical context. A free English audio guide helps you explore the interpretive room, the tapestry room, and the 13th-century seminary building. A junior audio guide, in English and French, makes this educational experience entertaining for older children. Younger kids can connect with the tapestry by coloring replica printouts using any hues they like. • I was a little skeptical going to see a tapestry of all things but was very pleasantly surprised. The audio tour was the difference that made the Tapestry come alive and made this a 5 star experience....  more »
  • Interesting museum with an immense tapestry (almost 70 meters) that counts some of the battles between Saxons and Normans at the dawn of the year 1000. It tells the story of William I of England until the Battle of Hastings. It's the story of Harold the Saxon until his death.

  • The tapestry was gorgeous and incredible. Audio guide was quite informative as well. We were pleasantly surprised that they had a kids version of the audio guide also that our children were very into.
  • My father really enjoyed seeing this. It was interesting how long they recorded time with a piece of fabric. I was a little bored, but my father loved it so that made it better for me.
