Trip Planner: Europe / France / Normandy / Basse-Normandie / Calvados / Bayeux / Musee Memorial de la Bataille de Normandie
One of the best on the topic, Musee Memorial de la Bataille de Normandie has a good balance of explanations of the infamous D-Day battle and interesting artifacts both small and large. Outside the museum are four armored vehicles: a Sherman tank, a Crocodile tank trailer, and Marder and M-10 Hellcat tank destroyers. Inside are a self-propelled 105 mm howitzer, a Quad-50 caliber anti-aircraft "meat chopper," a radio truck, a bulldozer, and several other large items. Interesting layout of the chronology of the D-Day landing and the people in charge, the equipment used by both sides and stories of individuals involved. Very interesting to see. Need about 1 1/2 to 2... more »

It would have taken us more time to see everything and especially read everything! We were told that in an hour and a third it was enough... I think 2hours would have been better. The very well made film lasts about 20 minutes. The Battle of Normandy is very well explained with never-before-seen archival images.
A lot of detail, and interesting exhibits. Nice to follow the timeline after the landings. Didn't have anything on the civilian populace, which was a shame, and whilst I found the information panels interesting, it was hard to keep the kids as engaged. Good vehicle displays. Located in a lovely town, and really good value, especially when combined with either of the other two museums in bayeux. The war cemetery in the town is on the other side of the road, and you spend time there too when visiting. Recommended.
For those with interest in WW2 history the museum is worth a visit. It has lots of artifacts on display. Especially on a rainy day visitors to Normandy can spend 2-3 hours going through the museum. The inbuilt cinema showing D-Day and the destruction of war is thought provoking. It also has a nice gift shop.
