Cathedrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne, Bayonne

#2 of 74 in Historic Sites in Basque Country
Must see · Monument · Church
Massive, Gothic, and incredibly detailed, it comes as no surprise that Cathedrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne took over four centuries to build. The Roman Catholic church serves as the seat of the bishop of the township and neighboring towns. Though originally of Romanesque design, two fires led to its total reconstruction in the 13th century. The current church wasn't completed until the 17th century, while its two landmark twin spires are 19th-century additions. Step inside to view the equally impressive interior, filled with art and stained glass windows. Plan a Bayonne trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • This cathedral is located in the centre of old Bayonne. The exterior architecture is well worth seeing. The interior is pleasant enough but very dark!  more »
  • Was a bit if a wait for food, slow service but amazing crepes! A popular spot next to the cathedral. Be sure to check it out as it's just next door and worth a visit. Overall recommend but would it pay to reserve a tablet in the busy summer period. The staff do speak Spanish and English also.
  • A very place to sit for a bit for a break and quiet. Quite pretty inside as far as churches go. Check also the side court which is quite pretty too.
