A military complex of 93-acres constructed between 1685 and 1689 to protect Bordeaux from attacks, Citadelle de Blaye overlooks the Gironde estuary. The walled city, built around a former monastery, includes several army barracks, as well as the 12th-century Rudel Castle, 12th-century Liverneuf Gate, and 15th-century Eguillette Tower. Guided tours explain the architecture of the site, as well as the defense system and how it was used.
