Trip Planner Europe  /  France  /  Corsica  /  Corse-du-Sud  /  Bonifacio

Islands · Historic Sites · Beaches
At the southernmost tip of the island of Corsica, Bonifacio is a city with chalk-white limestone outcrops sculpted into unusual shapes by the ocean. If you're a literature lover, pick up a copy of the popular short story, \"Vendetta\" by Guy de Maupassan to read on your visit--you'll find the true spirit of the city within those pages. Several hotels are located in the city's historic port, which is the only major harbor of the southern coast. The city is split into two sections: the vieille ville (old town) and la haute ville (the upper city) filled with modern amenities. The port is on the Bay of Bonifacio, a drowned ravine with the appearance of a fjord separated from the ocean by a finger-like promontory 1,500 m (4,900 ft) long and 200 m (660 ft) wide. The harbor, citadel, old town, and many boat cruises are available to take you out to view the jagged coast and cliffs from the water's perspective.
