American Cemetery & Memorial, Colleville-sur-Mer

American Cemetery & Memorial honors American soldiers who died in Europe during World War II. Most of the 9,387 graves contain the remains of American soldiers and military personnel who lost their lives during the D-Day landings and the operations that followed. East of the memorial, the semicircle garden has 1,557 names inscribed on the "Walls of the Missing,” with rosettes denoting the names of those who have since been identified. The semicircular colonnade has one loggia at each end containing narratives of military operations as well as huge maps. See the iconic bronze statue called the “Spirit of American Youth” in its center and, overlooking the beach, a tablet depicting the Normandy landings. • What about this place where thousands of men died for freedom? History is known, but to soak it up is a duty of remembrance. So, go and walk with them is to pay tribute to them.

  • A must visit for those who come to these areas. Very beautiful the museum with lots of movies and historical artifacts. Outdoors the expanse of white crosses..... to take your breath away... makes you think. A visit full of emotions that will pervade you even after you have left. Don't miss it.

  • Such a respectful presence of glory and mourning alike. Everything is tended to with such care and precision. Immaculate landscaping and maintenance for the paths, monuments, gravestones, and flora. Visitor center and bathrooms were being renovated so were not able to visit those (May '19).
  • It is an overwhelming experience, far from Paris but absolutely worthwhile; beholding the endless rows of tombs is a breathtaking feeling, the silence is estrange. Visiting this place is a unique experience, though I felt that death could be breathed, peace is in the air. Perfect for near history enthusiasts, every single detail is in perfect condition, if one has the opportunity, should not miss it definitively. On the other hand, there are some small restaurants in the nearby but good options, next to Omaha beach.
