Established by Henri Matisse in 1952, Musee departemental Matisse houses the third largest collection of his works in France. Matisse specified the way his works should be arranged, so you will view them as he wanted you to. The 17 exhibit rooms feature more than 170 Matisse works, 65 paintings by Auguste Herbin (given by the artist), paintings by Geneviève Claisse (relative and student of Herbin), elements of the Tériade collection of artists' books, and 30 photographs from the Henri Cartier-Bresson collection. • Matisse put French early 20th century painting on the fauvist trail. Excellent, low priced museum for the quality it offers. It puts Matisse in perspective with his contempories.
  • .Well worth a detour.
