Strategically placed at the entrance to the seven valleys of the Lavedan, Chateau Fort of Lourdes is an ancient fortress with origins dating back to Roman times. At the foot of the 14th-century keep lies the botanical garden with its unique miniatures. Look for the altar from Saint-Pierre de Lourdes, which has been relocated to the chapel. Discover the history of the Pyrénées through the large collection at the on-site museum. On display are locally made furniture and ceramics from the 18th century, traditional costumes and tools, and a shepherd’s hut. The tour is free is very interesting. The end takes place on the garden where pretty little villages are erected by an artist.
De moeite van het bezochten waard; mede, omdat het ‘iets anders’ is in Lourdes. Je kunt met een trap omhoog, of met de lift. Entrance is 7.50 for adults and youngsters up to 17 years get discount, as well as students. As stated in another review, there is no catering in the castle. Now a visit does not have to last too long; Depending on your interests. The nice thing is that it is a kind of mini village in a castle. There are exhibitions in various areas, where you can see how life was (agricultural implements, clothing, hand weaving, examples of a farmhouse room, bedroom etc. There si for example also an overview of a number of stuffed animals such as a bear, Raptors, Fox. The castle indeed has beautiful views. You can go up to the ' lookout tower ' with a round staircase, but that's actually a kind of attic room with plastic for the shooting and viewing holes. A more beautiful view you have at the Southern Cavalier viewpoint (also in the castle). Outside is a number of interesting models of Pyrenean architecture, such as farms, villages in a scale of 1 to 10. When buying a ticket you get a clear visitor's guide (also in the Dutch language). Everything is numbered, so you can easily follow the route.
