Basilique du Sacre-Ceour, Marseille

4.5
Admire the impressive interior structure and artistic details of Basilique du Sacre-Ceour, a 20th-century church that honors the victims of a massive 1720 plague outbreak and also commemorates World War I. Relatively unadorned on the outside, the church is best known for its interior columns, the largest of which came from Corsica. Other highlights include stained-glass windows made in Paris following the design of painter Henri Pinta, a native of Marseilles. Pinta also created the great mosaic adorning the choir vault, while artist Louis Botinelly carved some of the major sculptures inside the church. Be sure to walk around the building to view the stained-glass windows from the outside.
