Climb up the hill for a beautiful view of the bay from Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde, located at the highest natural point in Marseille. This Catholic basilica, showing Roman architectural influences, is the town's most prominent landmark. The church was built by the architect Henri-Jacques Espérandieu on a 149 m (490 ft) limestone outcrop on the south side of the old port. Seek out the great bell and silver statues of religious figures within the basilica. Planning Marseille trip won't be overwhelming when you use Inspirock's itinerary maker.

  • If you can only visit 1 site in Marseille, then choose this. The views from the cathedral alone make the visit worth it. It is also easily accessible by Bus 60 from Vieux Port.

  • It is a fortress like in most cases the name of God was used to defend. You have to climb, but it worth every step. You'll find there a nice view and can experience the feeling of those who have defended this strategic placed Basilica. Important part is closed for public an out is not allowed to climb in Tower. I'd love to.
  • Wow worth the trip. I went about 9am and walked up from downtown. Took about 25 mins but the exercise was needed. You can take a bus up the hill without problem. Dogs are not allowed. The views are the best in the city. Must go see. Go early and have a rest up there without crowds.
