Calanque du Sugiton, Marseille

#4 of 62 in Outdoors in Marseille
The Calanque de Sugiton is one of the numerous calanques located between Marseille and Cassis.
While quite small, Sugiton is perhaps the most known of all Marseille Calanques, simply because it can be easily accessed by hikers, starting from Luminy University Campus, and because it is open to tourists even during hot season, unlike most Calanques. In fact during summer most of the Calanques are closed because of high fire risk.
A small beach can be found at the extremity of the calanque.

  • Hotel-Dieu had recommended us to take the Bus 1 to Campus/Domaine de Luminy in Castellane. From there it is then 45min walking to Sugiton. Just before, certainly also the climb to the Belvedere to pick up for beautiful panoramic photos. From Luminy you have to count at 45min walking (without Belvedere). Back is 1h15 because you have to climb back to the Col de Sugiton. The roads are also on Google Maps. Along the way you constantly have the sounds of cicadas and grasshoppers. If you come to the rocks on the spot it is a bit scrambled to get to the water. Tip: We did this hike on July 24th, was over 35 °. Take enough food and drink with you, you can not buy on the road and on the spot.

  • Beware of non-sportsmen like me, I spit my lungs up by only 24 degrees but the game is worth it;-)

  • Very nice and easy hikes with different difficulties to this place are possible. Place is beautiful but very small and easily too crowded. I would recommend to go somewhere more remote on weekends or vacation season
  • This place was gorgeous. The one hour walk was definitely more challenging than we expected. You should also bring shoes as well. The beach has no sand and is quite tiny, so it was pretty hard to find a spot. Nevertheless, the beautiful views and clear water are worth it.
