This fortress was dreamed of, skillfully designed and built by the fiery Richard I of England, feudal Duke of Normandy, better known as Richard the Lionheart. Like its creator, the stronghold of Les Andelys calls to mind strength, power, invincibility. Yet, the virtually impregnable fortress would live only a few years, just like Richard, who was too confident in his talents as a warrior.

Today, Chateau Gaillard is a ruined medieval castle overlooking the River Seine. It has a complex and advanced design, and uses early principles of concentric fortification. The castle consists of three enclosures separated by dry moats, with a keep in the inner enclosure.   It is quite a hike from the town to the Chateau that overlooks the Seine River, high on a cliff. Part of the Chateau has been restored and part are the ruins. The view of the village and the...  more »

  Took a nice drive here. Viewed the chateau from the car park opposite as we didn't fancy the steep walk up. Very impressive ruin.  more »

  Fantastic views over the river. Extensive ruins but you don't see much more if you pay to go in. Good parking but quite a hike from the parking to the castle.

  A beautiful site overlooking the town and the river. Not a lot to see but worth a visit for the view. Lots of interesting shops and cafes in the nearby town.
