Sanctuaire du Mont Sainte Odile is located atop a 760 m (2,493 ft) peak in the Vosges Mountains immediately west of Barr. Located at the top, the monastery and covent are often deemed the "Pagan Wall" and are most notable for the impressive stone fortifications. Dating back to the Roman times, the fortress was possibly destroyed by vandals. During the second half of the ninth century, when Vikings attacked the low countries that had recently converted to Christianity, Utrecht bishops went into exile and spent much of their time at Sanctuaire du Mont Sainte Odile. Surrounding Celtic settlements and the Hohenburg Abbey make this a charming stop along any road trip.
