Conciergerie, Paris

3.7
An ancient medieval fortress and prison, Conciergerie features remarkable medieval royal architecture. This was the site of Marie Antoinette's imprisonment in the period leading up to her execution in 1793. Don't miss the clock tower, which is visible from the street and was cleaned in 2013: it is the oldest clock tower in Paris. • It's not a time-consuming or tiring ride. It is a very beautiful construction and has several interesting historical things. I thought I was going to see Marie Antoinette's doll in her cell, but they took a long time. Either way, it was worth it.

  • We are here in the heart of Paris in this former royal palace/parliament/prison that dates back to Philippe Auguste and which has a rather incredible history (see little guide at 8 euros). From the entrance, one is captivated by the huge rooms of the basement of people in arms and kitchens vaulted in the Gothic style. Then we are intrigued by the prison part that was made famous. during the period of terror with the reconstructed cells and in particular that of Marie Antoinette before its execution even if the mausoleum of the time of Louis XVIII profoundly changed its original appearance. More moving are the objects on loan from the Carnavalet Museum on display next door. The following small rooms (Robespierre, Fouquet Tinville ...) are well documented and the court of the women's prison remained to the same remarkable . See in particular "the grid of twelve" that allowed the condemned to say goodbye before the scaffold. A tip try, if you are a history lover, to benefit from a guide (at 11 o'clock for me) for a detailed but at how interesting a 30 hour tour. Outside of course photograph the 4 towers including that of the clock which are the only remains on the surface of the Middle Ages.

  • Amazing exhibition, loved every piece of it. A must see if you are a history fan. Everything explained in French, mainly in English too, some of them even in German. To rent an iPad for guided tour available on other languages as well, and not wasted money at all. Look around and have fun! :)
  • Amazing experiences. Loved to learn more about the French Revolution history and see how this place was transformed during different centuries. Worth a visit.
