Chapelle Foujita, Reims

4.1
#6 of 16 in Historic Sites in Reims
Chapelle Foujita was constructed at Rue de la Mars in 1965-1966 by the Japanese artist, Tsuguharu Foujita. It is most famous for the frescos he hand painted in the interiors. A converted catholic, Foujita designed the chapel, all of the ironwork, stained glass, and the sculptures. At the age of 80, he painstakingly painted the frescoes in blues, greens, yellows, and browns with Christian themes, as well as with depictions of his friend and his wife. The Catholic diocese consecrated the chapel in 1966, and France listed it as an historic monument in 1992. • A Japanese who converted to Christianity and painted the cathedral in an unusual style (biblical themes with Japanese touches). Very unusual and insanely beautiful chapel

  • Fujita's church. Inside is a mural painted by Fujita, and it is a church where Fujita himself and his wife are sleeping. Please note that it is closed in winter and is open in summer, so it is necessary to check with the website in advance.

  • I loved the exterior of the church, but unfortunately I did not get to see the interior because it was closed despite the fact that it said on the gate it was supposed to be open from 2 to 6. I went there at 2:15 and then later again at 4:30 but it was not open. I recommend that you plan other activities alongside this if you are planning on visiting because it probably will not be open.
