Corderie Royale, a vast complex filled with museums and architecture, attracts as many as 150,000 yearly visitors. First built in 1666, the complex was spearheaded by architect François Blondel. After a brief strike that stopped construction, the structure was built by a team of 700 workers, who finally completed the project in 1669. Restoration of the site began in 1976 and ended in 1988, transforming the site into a hub for culture and history.     La Corderie Royale is a masterpiece of Rochefortian architecture. The place is enormous and the atmosphere takes you to a navy-military France. A must see.  more »

    What a brilliant museum! I would never imagine being interested in rope making, but the English audio guide is so good. The commentary is excellent and is so humorous that your attention is held...  more »

    Marvelous exhibition that is carefully thought out and engaging. An English translation guide is available at the ticket office and includes the film and exhibits. Who knew that making rope could be enchanting? Excellent bookstore (French) and adequate gift shop (preferred the Hermione boutique). Children were very engaged. The entire area is designed with kids in mind. Lots of hands on activity. There is a battleship maze nearby. Impressed by the two guys staffing the rope workshop.
