Art Gallery · Hidden Gem · Architectural Building
The former ossuary (a cemetery for plague victims' bodies) at Ecole Supérieure d'Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen is an eerie reminder of the plague's devastation during the Middle Ages. Take a stroll in the 16th-century, half-timber courtyard, which has four galleries with carved designs. Large beams in the fourth gallery feature haunting carvings of bones and skulls, as well as coffins and gravediggers' tools. Finding the entrance can be tricky. Keep an eye out overhead for a sign with the name of the atrium, which you access through a passage between two buildings,. As you enter the grounds, look to your right to see a mummified cat preserved in the wall. • They are doing extensive renovations but its worth trying to see this place. Wonderfully macabre carvings.  more »
  • Historic sight in full restauration, but still worth the stop. Read about the "birth" of this site to understand it's meaning.  more »
