Gros Ouvrage Maginot du Hackenberg is among the largest of the Maginot Line fortifications in Thionville. The fort was considered as a showpiece of French fortification technology back then and was even visited by the British King George VI. The fort used to provide covering fire to harass German forces and neighboring states. Today Hackenberg operates as a museum. The site is made of about 17 combat blocks and 18 artillery pieces covering a large area. There are a few galleries spread across the site that house the museum pieces. One of the blocks is open to the public and displays the working of a turret to its visitors. There is also an electric train that visitors can use for touring the site. Great tour in English by a full of energy gramdma from the village, she even showed us how the main gun tower worked. Very impressive. I feel very sad for this people, they are fighting hard to keep alive the memories from this cruel war, and in my opinion they are very abandoned from the central government, in Germany they would have thousands of grants and funds, but there I felt like they are abandoned. Thanks for keeping alive the history!
This place was awesome! The tour guide was excellent and gave great information and was able to answer in depth questions. The site features a still functioning underground train to get around the vast area. It also has functioning guns that they raise and lower, and walk through the loading and firing process, all of which still works. There is also a museum part with a large collection of weapons, uniforms etc. from all sides of WWI. I definitely recommend visiting!
