Visit a predominantly Islamic village on the Gambia River at Jufureh--a popular tourist attraction due to its preserved colonial structures and Alex Haley's celebrated novel "Roots." The site once served as the departure point for British, Dutch, French, and pirate trade ships packed with gold, ivory, and slaves. Explore the ruins of forts, trading posts, and improvised slave dungeons, as well as a museum with a replica slave ship. Note that most of the ruins suffer from gradual decay due to coastal erosion, which washes away their foundations.
