Mittelalterliche Lochgefangnisse, Nuremberg

3.4
In the vaulted cellars of the old town hall lies Mittelalterliche Lochgefangnisse, a relic of the medieval justice system that's now a museum. You'll notice that may of the 2-by-2 m (6.5-by-6.5 ft) cells are marked with symbols showing the offenses of the people kept within centuries ago. Cell 11, for example, is marked with a red rooster for arson. Inside, you'll see the stark furnishings given to the prisoners. A wooden plank for instance, served as both a bed and table. Continuing through the depths, you'll also find a blacksmith shop and the torture chamber, where punishments were carried out on the orders of the Municipal Court. Take the guided tour to get a full history of each section. Arrange to visit Mittelalterliche Lochgefangnisse and other attractions in Nuremberg using our Nuremberg road trip website.
