Landmark · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
In the central square of Athens, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier commemorates Greek soldiers who have given their lives for their country but whose bodies remain unidentified or missing. The monument takes the form of a large wall with the figure of a fallen soldier carved into the center. The border around the soldier resembles a casket. The Presidential Guard, or Evzones, stand watch over the tomb 24 hours a day. These elite soldiers wear a traditional uniform of a long tunic, cotton kilt, red fez, stockings, and red clogs adorned with black pompoms. Come pay your respects to the brave soldiers immortalized here, and watch the famous changing of the guard ceremony, which occurs every hour. • Must see - the change of guard which happens every hour. The soldiers wearing their ceremonial overalls look impressive. Children had fun reading the pigeons. Located at a very central place. Easy to go to Monastiraki Square or Acropolis from here Nearby National Garden is a nice place to cool down.
  • A must see for the Greek take on the changing of the Guard. The tradition and synchronisation of the Guards is incredible. Go in the evening to avoid the hot sun during the peak summer season.
