Morosini Fountain (Lion's Fountain), Heraklion

Fountain · Tourist Spot
Relax by Morosini Fountain (Lion's Fountain), the ornate Venetian fountain that serves as the picturesque meeting point of the city. Featuring four lions with water gushing from their mouths, the fountain was constructed to supply Heraklion with unlimited drinking water. The basin stands on a circular base that is composed of eight lobes, making it easy for multiple people to fill their water jars simultaneously. The lobes feature relief scenes from Greek mythology, primarily Tritons, dolphins, nymphs, and mythical water beings. • Heraklion is lot bigger than we could ever imagine, it's a big working, industrial city, mostly modern, not much of that typical Greek style streets. The area around Morosini fountain was something...  more »
  • The fountain is beautiful and a piece of history since it's super old. There was some trash in the water though but overall a lovely place on a great little square. A lot of oppertunities to eat or drink something since there are bars and restaurants around. The center is also a lovely place with a lot of (brand)shops and little boutiques.
  • The square itself around the fountain is bustling and busy and when in Heraklion one should pop round there to see the fountain and also walk down the little road with all the shops for some shopping. Touristy things for sale. Among other very unique items. The fountain itself is not being maintained well and has deteriorated a lot since my last visit a few years back.
