Explore the dark side of Hungarian and European history at House of Terror Museum, a specialty museum focusing on fascist and communist regimes. The permanent exhibits feature artifacts from Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, the fascist Arrow Cross Party, and the communist AVH (Hungarian State Protection Authority). Walk into the depths of violent, dictatorial moments that took place the 20th century by stepping into the museum's basement, where AVH prisoners were once held and tortured. These cells serve as a memorial to victims of the country's bloody regimes. Since it opened in 2002, this museum has become a member of the Platform of European Memory and Conscience. It’s a bit of a mood kill. Most of it is in Hungarian and the bits in English are on A4 sheets of paper, if you love reading, you’ll be in heaven! It’s good to see the staff getting into the... more »
Allow a couple of hours. We ran through it in a couple of hours and could have spend a lot more time in there. A great museum. It was very in depth an full of information. As to be expected there was not a not of uplifting information in there. I really enjoyed the raw information and interviews.
It's a nice experience if you want to dig deeper in the history of Hungary. The audio guide is highly recommended and it's available in s lot of languages. Be aware that otherwise you will be stuck with having to pick up paper sheets to read in every room.
