At Matthias Church--within World Heritage Site Buda Castle--admire an eclectic fusion of architectural styles. Originally built in the 14th century (although an 11th century church occupied the site previously), the church has undergone major expansion and renovation, most notably by the hand of Frigyes Schulek from 1873-96. On the outside, a rococo spire laden with snarling gargoyles and intricate detailing rises out of the main body of the church--a 15th century construction in the French style. Colorful chevrons and diamonds adorn the roof. Step inside and you'll find an interior even more elaborate than the exterior, where 19th century geometric patterns and tilework complement the restored medieval frescoes, bright stained-glass windows, and fluted pillars. Head upstairs for views of the Danube, or downstairs to see the treasury, which includes a replica of the Crown of St. Stephen. Put Matthias Church and other Budapest attractions into our Budapest road trip planning site, and watch your holiday take shape.
Matthias Church reviews
Very nice church and located in a nice location. We visited it after taking part in a free walking tour that helped us learn about the history of the city. more »
There's a gleam, there's a gleam. Shining off the white stone, the sun illuminates the exterior with a shimmering and mystical glow. Colors cascade and caress each other on the roof, protecting the... more »
Great place to visit on you’re holiday in Budapest. Close to the bastion (Free during off seasons) the church offers a brilliant spectacle. The roof is made from local tiles, which is part of the rich history. The inside has amazing patterns and designs and offers the opportunity to go up to the second floor which gives you a view of the ground floor.
Real fascinating structure and architecture. I highly recommend purchasing tickets to access the bastion or the top of Matthias Church spire, I must warn you, not for those who can't walk up several narrow flights of stairs. The whole experience was worth it once you do make it to the top. I don't think you can get a 360 view of Budapest anywhere else. The church itself is extremely ornate and full of interesting historical artifacts *not sure if they were all real*
