Trip Planner: Europe / Hungary / Central Hungary / Budapest / St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika)
Visit the prominent Hungarian landmark St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika), known for its 91 m (300 ft) Neo-Renaissance-style dome. This Roman Catholic basilica--built in the Neoclassic architectural style with a Greek Cross floor plan--was completed in 1905 and used for military purposes during World War II. While it is still used for religious worship today, this church is also one of the most visited tourist sites in the country. The right hand of St. Stephen I, the first King of Hungary, is housed in the church's reliquary. View the basilica's structure and bell towers from the square in front of its main entrance, explore the interior of the church, and climb the 364 stairs (or take the elevator) to the top of the dome, which overlooks the city. St. Stephen's Basilica (Szent Istvan Bazilika) reviews
There is an observation deck which offers a panoramic view of the city. But this is overrated church. Yes, the rich interior decoration is definitely a surprise, but it is overcrowded. more »
Fabulous building, a must see in Budapest. Grab a coffee on the square and soak up the atmosphere. Great Instagram opportunity, both inside and outside 👏 more »
Stunning stunning Basilica. Can't say enough about it. One of the most beautiful churches I've seen in Europe. Inside and out the decoration and attention to detail is magnificent. Go up to the dome for superb views of Budapest, be sure to walk all around the inside of the church for beautiful decoration and stained glass windows. Magnificent.
This building is stunning. The artwork on the ceiling and walls is beautiful. People mention having to pay to enter the Church - You do not, you only pay to ascend to the Dome, which is a very worth while experience also. I attended Mass here and the service was also great! Great choir and sermon.
