Head to Taman Sari to view royal buildings and pleasure gardens designed for regal relaxation. Built under the command of Sultan Hamengkubuwono I as a house of rest and entertainment for the royal family, the ample grounds and buildings today function as a cultural center and museum of local history. The bathing areas that give the complex its name provide a fascinating perspective on the life of Sultans. Today the site offers walking routes and a good introduction to local history, with information panels and guided tours available. Beautiful architecture! Went in the rainy season but still was stunning to see. Best bit was actually roaming about the streets around the Tamansari and seeing the locals living in the royal area. more »
A lovely place, but can get very crowded. Early morning on a weekday is best if you want any chance of a photo without hordes of other people in it. The "guides" that ply there trade at the site are not that knowledgeable, don't speak great English, and will try to rush you through. However, they are useful in guiding you to the nearby underground mosque (included in the ticket price), as it can be difficult to find. Much more interesting and beautiful than the Sultan's palace.
Cheap entrance fee, good spots for photo but very crowded. Walk towards the entrance, tour guide available for a tourist who want to now the story of this place with additional charge. Reject them politely if you want to skip the history of the water castle. I am not sure why some people disliked this place , as I thought it was beautiful, even in its somewhat dilapidated state. It is very atmospheric and on a hot day, you can imagine how lovely it must have been to bathe there.
