Local mythology claims Rock of Cashel, a limestone hill crowned by a group of medieval buildings, came into existence when Saint Patrick banished Satan from a cave in a nearby mountain. Kings of Munster lived here for several centuries before the Norman invasion, adding structures to fortify their hilltop seat of power. Little structural evidence of that time remains, as the oldest building still standing on the rock is a round tower constructed sometime in the 12th century. Next to the tower stands a Romanesque chapel, Gothic cathedral, and a 15th century castle. Very neat looking! Car park is 4.50€, but small. Can walk the whole town from parking there. If you eat at a local restaurant you can get free tickets to get in. Toilets are convenient. There is a little souvenir shop there too. You'll be walking up a steep hill, but it is all pretty flat.
Beautiful ruins and nice views from this place. Gets pretty busy. The town is also nice for small shops and a bite to eat. Bathrooms are not on the grounds as an FYI. Parking is a bit tricky so park where you can in town and do the short walk.
