Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem

4.5
With a gracefully pointed lintel and high precision-cut stone blocks, Jaffa Gate welcomes visitors from two directions--the only one of Jerusalem's eight gates to do so. Located on the western wall of the Old City, it resembles a tower projecting from fortified walls. Climb the wall of the gate to get a sweeping view of the bustling city, and explore side doors and corridors for a better understanding of the military significance of the structure. Inaugurated in 1538 by Suleiman the Magnificent, the gate guards the road to Jaffa; the square just beyond it has entrances to the Muslim, Christian, and Armenian quarters. Jaffa Gate is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Jerusalem Edition.

  • Entrances to enter the old city... millions of people pass through this gate in all centuries and you will have the chance to do the same.  more »
  • There are 7 doors on the walls surrounding the old town. The most central one of the gates used to enter the city is this gate, known as the Khaleel al-Khaleel. In the 16th century, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Suleiman the Magnificent, repaired and strengthens the city walls. Meanwhile, he makes this door and prints "La Ilahe Illallah, Ibrahim Halilullah" on it. So "there is no God but Allah, Ibrahim is the Halil of Allah. The name of Halil, which is being passed in the Qur'an, is one of the titles of Hz. Ibrahim (as) and means Allah is friendly. The side of the door is expanded so that vehicles can pass.

  • Awesome place and you get that amazing reality check that you are in ancient Israeli Jerusalem. Thank goodness it's in Israeli control or we would of lost it all years ago. Best way in to the old city and very neat to the Jewish quarter which is the best and most hassle free place in all of the Old City.
  • An important landmark in old city of Jerusalem. Near David tower and the tram line. Close to Zion square as well. This is a good point to start your visit , as u can find a tourist info bus near the gate
