Basilica di Santa Chiara, Assisi

#4 of 897 in Things to do in Province of Perugia
Architectural Building · Religious Site
See the original Cross of San Damiano, which is duplicated all over town, at Basilica di Santa Chiara. This church is dedicated to and contains the remains of Saint Clare of Assisi, a founder of the Order of Poor Ladies (now the Order of Saint Clare). Admire the simple pink and white stone facade. The basilica is quite plain compared to other Italian churches, in keeping with Saint Clare’s humble lifestyle. Descend into the crypt and see a statue of Saint Clare, a display of her relics, and art depicting her life. • So beautiful! 💙💚💛💜 I am very happy I got to visit Assisi this year. Didn't go last time. The Basilica was divinely majestic and a true jewel of the Christian world.
  • So beautiful! I loved seeing the real San Damiano cross and the clothes and hair of St Clare as well as some of St Francis' clothes. And the tomb of St Clare is a wonderful place to pray.
