Cattedrale di San Rufino, Assisi

4.5
World heritage site · Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
A visit to Cattedrale di San Rufino will have you at the doors of one of the most important churches in the history of the Franciscan order. It is also famous for being the church in which Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Clare, and many of their disciples were baptized. The cathedral originated in the 12th century, after the bishop of Assisi had a miraculous vision. The Romanesque facade is a typical example of 12th-century Umbrian churches, and is divided into three levels featuring highly decorative friezes. Visit the famous font inside, and at the same time take a look at the underground crypt, which houses a Roman sarcophagus from the third century. • Interesting due to the connection with St Francis. I enjoyed the way the archeology was blended into the church's floor. It is worth a brief stop.  more »

  • We went and there were very few people which was nice so we could visit the crypt museum of St. Francis (where he prayed) which exhibited amazing works of art underneath the cathedral. Because there wasn't a crowd, like at the Basilica of St Francis, we were able to truly enjoy and slowly take in the several floors of the museum. Definitely recommend.
  • Stricter on dress code than other Italian cathedrals and churches. Make sure your knees and shoulders are fully covered if you are a woman. Men with just above the knee shorts might get in, but probably not worth the gamble.
