Sinagoga di Firenze e Museo ebraico, Florence

#14 of 96 in Museums in Florence
History Museum · Hidden Gem · Religious Site
One of the largest synagogues in Europe, Sinagoga di Firenze e Museo ebraico was built between 1874 and 1882, just after the emancipation of the Italian Jews in 1861. Unique in its Moorish style, the cupola, which is covered in green copper, stands out in the skyline of the city. Inside, walk through the filtered light that passes through the stained-glass windows, and admire the murals that grace the walls. Visit the museum, which holds many objects and photos documenting the history of Florence's Jewish community. Guided tours are available, but make sure to reserve ahead of time. • This was such a beautiful visit but sad because of what happened to the community when the Nazis came. But now we have to make the community even better. Support daily services and study sessions and you will be honouring the memory of those who worked so hard to build this beautiful structure and those who were denied the opportunity to enjoy it.
  • It’s a large and beautiful Synagogue. There is a dome with beautiful stained glass. Also has museum with lots of information. It was short and sweet but very nice. If by chance your a female who forget to wear a shirt that covers your shoulders, they do provide a throwaway shirt to put over it.
