#4 of 35 in Historic Sites in Lucca
Religious Site · Hidden Gem · Church
Stop into Basilica of San Frediano, known for its enormous golden 13th-century mosaic of Christ's ascension, designed by Berlinghiero Berlinghier in a Byzantine style. The inside of the cathedral is carved entirely of white marble, and houses Roman capitals repurposed from the Roman amphitheater nearby. The focal point, though, is the enormous 12th-century baptismal font, the Fonte Lustrale, decorated with biblical scenes by medieval Lombardi sculptors. Outside, you can enjoy dinner at one of the cafes along with views of the cathedral's glittering facade.
