Scaliger Castle in Malcesine
Time seems to stand still at Scaliger Castle in Malcesine, a medieval structure with winding battlements and a tower overlooking Lake Garda. It is believed that a fortification of some sort has existed on this site since as early as the fifth century, but most of the structures visible today were added in the 13th century by the della Scala family, rulers of Verona. During that time the structure was fortified and became an important part of the region’s defensive system. Since 1902 the castle has been a national monument, and today it contains a small museum on the natural history of Lake Garda. Climb the tower for sweeping views of the lake and the town, but be careful of the clock bell, which chimes earsplittingly on the hour. Guided tours can be pre-booked by telephone. Excellent castle in the heart of the town. Very reasonably priced to get in (€6 per adult). Lots of exhibits which have English translations including the history of the lake and castle and the wildlife of the lake. If you have the energy you can climb the bell tower and the views are spectacular from up there. Overall essential visiting if you are in the town!

Definitely worth the €6 price tag, the views are amazing! Thoroughly recommend the climb to the top of the tower but not recommended for those with mobility issues as some of the stairs are very awkward. Great little section on Goethe which was an added bonus.
