Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, Milan

4.9
A hidden gem of the city, Chiesa di San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore is a fully frescoed Renaissance church noted for paintings by Bernardino Luini, an artist who worked closely with Leonardo da Vinci and became known for his graceful female figures with elongated eyes. The church was originally attached to the city’s most important female convent of the Benedictines, which now serves as an archaeological museum. These adjoining buildings were erected on pre-existing Roman foundations, with some of the ancient elements incorporated into the new structures. Construction began in 1503, with the complex divided into one section for the faithful, and one for the nuns. For nearly three centuries the nuns were forbidden to cross the dividing wall. Today, the complex is open daily for both worshippers and art enthusiasts. • You don't know where you're looking at so much beauty. Enjoy with time, the row of wooden chairs propitiates to sit and contemplate. At the bottom of the ship on the left side you'll find paintings about the wonderful flood.

  • You must visit here when you visit Milan. Surprisingly, the admission is free! Also no lunch break. You can go anytime during the day. You see beautiful Fresco painting all over the church. I heard one of Leonard Da Vinci’s well-known disciples were one of the painters. Better than many other places I visited in Milan. The outside is not that outstanding so don’t miss it. Next to Archeology Museum.
  • Pure beauty! Every time I visit this church there is only one question that lingers in my mind: how is it possible that entrance is free when there are dozens of lousy churches around the world in cities like Prague, Vienna or Krakow where they charge you even 10 euros to see a couple of poor-quality paintings? Here you have examples of absolute perfection and mastery for free!
