  • Literally stumbled upon this place. Well worth the €1 to see the fresco of Madonna della Madia. Steep stairs, and decent information, though maybe you should read a bit up on it before going in.  more »
  • Went down some steep, quite perilous steps and was greeted by a nice old man who took our 1 Euro entrance fee. Small and ancient but I would say it's worth a visit. The information is also in English....  more »

  • Hypogeal settlement of worship, probably realized in the tenth century, which originally overlooked the ancient port canal basement in the Norman era. Access to the crypt is marked by a sculptural group in stone of 1517 attributed to Stefano da Putignano, from the Church of S. Maria la Nova, demolished in 1529. The staircase that descends in the crypt presents, on a bezel of the vault, a now deteriorated fresco in which the Madonna with the child is recognizable. The hypogeum, rectangular in shape, is divided into two distinct areas, "Naos" and "Bema" with a double apse, a triforium or a septum formed by two pillars that support three round arches. The only fresco preserved is that of the Virgin enthroned with child, perhaps of the THIRTEENTH century.
