Surround yourself with some gems of early Renaissance art at Battistero del Duomo di Padova. Adjacent to the Padua Cathedral, this small baptistery is easy to miss, but once you step inside you'll be amazed by the collection of frescoes. The work of 14th-century painter Giusto de' Menabuoi, the paintings tell stories of the Bible, the most remarkable of which is the depiction of paradise inside the dome of the baptistery. Using the shape of the dome, the artist manages to create an almost three-dimensional image. You'll pay a fee to enter the baptistery, but the site does allow you to take photos. It's not a bad idea to bring a camera with a strong zoom lens or a pair of binoculars to fully enjoy the details on the frescoes. Battistero del Duomo di Padova reviews
We took a day trip to Padua, and the Duomo is well worth the trip. It is very large, with the highlights being the tomb of Saint Anthony and the Chapel of Relics. Small guidebooks are available at..... more »
Yes, restoration is in prrogress with scaffolding practically filling the interior! But there is enough on display to give you a sense of what the whole will look like and it is fascinating to watch..... more »
This was a majestic cathedral! We visited it during the feast of Virgin Mary on August 15th so there were a whole assembly with a choir and lots of mass attendants and priests and I think even the bishop. The cathedral is quite plain and simple yet so impressive. You also have to visit the Baptistery which is next to the cathedral.
A beautiful sanctuary was ransacked and mutilated by a comical, ill-placed, occult-like, illegible contemporary art installation pretending to be sacred/liturgical art. So sad.
