Ragione Palace, Padua

4.5
Government Building · Architectural Building
Supported by stories of arches, the medieval town hall of Ragione Palace contains one of the largest roofs unsupported by columns in Europe. Finished in 1219, the building contains 333 panels and three tiers of frescoes. The building also contains the Stone of Shame, where debtors were made to stand in their underwear and hit their bottom three times. There's also a wooden horse statue carved by Annibale Capodilista to be used in jousts. After admiring the impressive building and its art, visit several floors of food stalls within, as well as the food markets flanking the building outside. • For a family of 4 this is the quickest way to blow just over 30 euros in about 4 minutes! It’s basically a giant barn with some reasonably painted murals on the ceiling, a huge wooden horse and a few modern paintings. We wish we’d kept the money to go towards lunch.
  • Whatever they were thinking when they decided to allow market stalls around and inside this gorgeous palace?? Can't see the facade, can't be bothered to go in because of the meat shops inside. Yes, meat shops.
