Once a Jesuit seminary and a military hospital, Museo Nazionale Romano - Palazzo Massimo alle Terme contains a huge collection of mosaics and Roman statuary. This building is one of four national museums spread across the city, and a ticket purchased here will allow you entry into the other three venues as well. The basement of this particular building contains a sizable numismatic collection, showing the evolution of Italian currency over the ages. The upper floors are devoted to sculptures created between the second century BCE and first century CE. The displays explore themes of Hellenistic influences on Roman art and the development of the portraiture of the emperors. The top floor accommodates a collection of wall frescoes and pavement mosaics, most notably including those that were once used as decoration in elite Roman residences. • Was rather disappointing as many of the exhibits were closed due to COVID and small rooms they were in in. Compared to the museum we went to in Napoli this one pales by comparison which is strange...  more »
  • Quite simply one of the very best museums in Rome. The collection of ancient statues is one of the best in the world, highlights include a full statue of Augustus from his lifetime, the discus thrower and the bronze boxer. Similarly, the frescoes from the Villa of Livia is the best and most complete example of ancient painting I've ever seen
  • More chok full of Imperial art and Imperial Roman interior design than the Capitoline Museum. An absolute must see. If you have even 2 hours between trains at Termini just run over here!!! It took me a whole day to see. Entire painted roman villa rooms, complete floor tiles and statues of Marcus Aurelius and family.....all here!
