A National Historic Site surrounded by a striking Japanese landscape, Takeda Castle Ruins sits at 353 m (1,158 ft) above sea level. Constructed in 1411 and abandoned in the 17th century after its last lord, Akamatsu Hirohide, committed seppuku, the castle remains a ruined reminder of the region's turbulent history. Parking is available at the nearby restaurant, a short walk from the ruins. Check the website for the site's seasonal opening times. The journey getting to the Takeda Castle ruins via train from Himeji was just as interesting as the ruins themselves. It was a cold winter’s morning that I departed. To get to Takeda from Himeji... more »

Breathtaking sight of being surrounded by clouds while only being 300+ meters high. Come early morning in autumn for the most beautiful "sea of clouds". The castle ruins also add to the majesty of the whole experience.

I decide to go for the combination of the view and exercise/hike. It is a short hike to the castle but there are other trails close by. The place wasn't too crowded when I went but I am sure that is probably different when it is warmer outside. There is like one train per hour. For example, I arrived a quarter til the hour and a local train fell on the half and the express on the next hour. Both getting me back to Himeji at the same time. So, plan your time getting back accordingly. I killed time by grabbing a late lunch one street over. The place was not on Google maps but pretty tastee.
