Daigo-ji Temple Niomon, Fushimi

3.6
#175 of 609 in Historic Sites in Kyoto
See a historic place of worship at Daigo-ji Temple Niomon, a UNESCO-protected Shingon Buddhist temple. Founded in 874 CE, the temple's name translates as "ghee," used metaphorically here to conjure images of the "crème de la crème" of Buddhist thought. Admire the artistry and architecture of the temple's five-story pagoda, constructed in 951 CE, representing the oldest surviving building in the city and officially listed as one of the National Treasures of Japan. The temple has gained protection as part of a wider area of ancient monuments. To visit Daigo-ji Temple Niomon and other attractions in Kyoto, use our Kyoto trip planner .

  • Enter the front of Daigo-ji Temple and go straight along the gravel road while looking at Sanhoin on the left, you will find the pale pink Niomen (an important cultural property). When you enter this gate, you will change into a view, such as the okuzashiki of Daigo-ji Temple, where nature is deep. It is the gate of the making that there is about 2m in depth.

  • It is on the way from Karamon to Jindo. The statue of Kongo sumo wrestlers was founded during the Heian period. There is a power. I want to stop by all means and see it.
