Trip Planner: Asia / Japan / Kanto / Kanagawa Prefecture / Ashigarashimo-gun / Hakone-machi / Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu
Tucked away on the forested shores of Lake Ashi, Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu stands as one of the nation's major Shinto sites. Founded originally in the 8th century, the complex includes buildings that date back to the 1660s. The grounds feature an array of wooden structures with swooping rooftops and a distinctive black-and-red color scheme, all surrounded by dense cedar woods. Note that many dragons and dragon-like creatures from Japanese mythology adorn the interiors of the shrine's buildings, intended to protect the site from evil spirits. Don't miss the entryway of the main shrine--this red gate, just offshore in the waters of the lake, represents one of the most iconic scenes anywhere in the country. Very beautiful place. I recommend getting there at sunrise if you’re looking for that perfect photo. It gets very congested and people waiting in line don’t give you room or time for photos. Good food vendors, prices are decent.
This shrine is stunning. It's an easy walk from the ship landing through the town and up the street to the shrine and once you are there, you'll know because the entrance can't be missed. It's a gorgeous walk past some very ancient trees and up some stairs to the main shrine area. The tori gate on the water is a photo opportunity none missed and there was a long line to have a photo taken there.
